Under the lead of Pamela Napier and Lee Vander Kooi, select Herron School of Art & Design graduate students partnered with AIGA Chicago, Growing Home, and various local designers for the main purpose of teaching co-design approaches through practical application. Our team was responsible for developing and facilitating a one-day, condensed co-design workshop for local designers, community members, and Growing Home staff.

UCDA Engagement Project on Suicide Prevention

Each year, the University and College Designers Association (UCDA) elicits designers to support a social issue. Voluntarily, our team chose to address the proposed engagement challenge of suicide prevention. Utilizing a collaborative design process, we developed a guerilla-style campaign, which focused on bringing the topic of teenage suicide into everyday vernacular. Ultimately, our solution was selected as a finalist by the UCDA and shared with educational campuses for distribution.

Hawthorne Community Center: Design Research Project

Through a partnership between Hawthorne Community Center and the Herron Visual Communication MFA program, our class was asked to identify ways for improving the efficacy of the community center. To achieve this goal we drew upon participatory design research methodologies in order to understand and assess existing services from the end-user's perspective.

Hawthorne Community Center: Homeless Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program Assessment

Housed within the Community Center, the Homeless Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program sought to improve program outcomes through better serving client needs. To do so, we aimed to first develop a deep understanding of the current user’s experience through researching aspects of demographics, personal life, employment, routines, anxieties, problems, desires, and aspirations. From this understanding, new insights and opportunities for better serving clients could be developed.
